Poloniny National Park
On the trail of the European bison
This unique Experience Wilderness Tour takes us to untouched virgin forests, beautiful mountain meadows and wild primeval creatures. We roam the largest complex of natural beech and fir forests in Europe, which is home to wildcats, bears, wolves and lynxes! In addition, one of the largest wild populations of bison in the world lives here.
In this 8-day expedition we travel by minibus, spend the night in a rustic, managed forest hut on the Poland / Slovakia border, and finally hike deep into the Poloniny National Park. We pitch our tents on the edge of a forest rich in old and dead wood and live for 5 days in the fascinating wilderness of the Eastern or Forest Carpathians. We watch roaring deer in the twilight, sneak up on hazel grouse and white-backed woodpecker, read the tracks of wolves and bison, light fires without a match and listen to stories about the wilderness around the campfire. We also enjoy the decelerating power and tranquility of nature, hike across species-rich flower meadows and to the edge of a primeval forest. As a final highlight, we explore the natural and cultural landscape of the Eastern Carpathian Biosphere Reserve on horseback.
